Dear CEF Member Archive,
April by now is somewhat synonymous with An Taisce's National Spring Clean. National Spring Clean is Ireland's most popular, well recognised and successful anti-litter initiative. Now in its 14th year, the campaign encourages every sector of society to actively participate and take responsibility for litter, by actually conducting clean-ups in their own local environment. The campaign runs throughout the month of April. CEF is getting involved with some beach clean-ups, there will be a few Nappucino - Real Nappy Week talks and more screenings of Trashed. You can get involved in these events or organise your own local clean-up and register your event online or by phone with An Taisce.

3rd April:    Beach clean-up in partnership with Garryvoe Hotel and An Taisce Clean Coast Programme. Meet at the carpark of the Hotel at 2pm.
Details of other clean-ups to be finalised.

16th April:  Talk and discussion at Blackpool Library "Real Nappies... Real Change!" to inspire a new generation of parents to make the change   and Go Real.

Trashed       To be screened in Midleton, Clonakilty and Newmarket during April, details of dates and venues will be circulated shortly.

10th April    See details of a public meeting in Macroom to identify Job Creation Opportunities. If you are unable to attend but have ideas you would like to input especially in the area of "green jobs" please let me know.

13th April     Cork County Council and An Taisce's Clean Coast Programme are having an East Cork Coastcare Seminar on Saturday 13th April  at 1.30pm for coastal groups in the East Cork area. This is by invite, however, if you are interested you can contact Aidan Gray by phone or email at 087 6826934 or agray@eeu.antaisce.org.

Adopt A Road: This scheme introduced last year by Cork County Council is ideal for groups such as Tidy Towns who wish to take on an additional challenge to combat litter in their area. We encourage groups to consider taking on this scheme especially for National Spring Clean month.  See details.

BioBlitz 2The National Biodiversity Data Centre, in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Coillte and the Centre for Environmental Data and Recording is organising Ireland’s BioBlitz event on 24 & 25 May 2013.  The event will be held at four locations; Wicklow Mountains National Park, Co. Wicklow, Burren National Park, Co. Clare, Lough Key Forest Park, Co. Roscommon and Colebrooke Estate, Co. Fermanagh. More details.

Lastly I have a few notices of forthcoming courses from associates which are not environmentally related but may be of interest. SHEP Courses in Cork April & May and "Create Harmony" with Thomas Reidmuller.

Best regards,

Bernie

Dear CEF Member Archive,
It’s the last week of Mix Your Mode and I would really appreciate if you could circulate this email and encourage people to support our earth hour challenge.

Download the Avego app through their website. Or for an iphone here and an android phone through this link.

We are involved in 2 events at the Lifetime Lab tomorrow, Friday 22nd March, as part of the Lifelong Learning Festival:
There will be a final FREE composting workshop at the Lifetime Lab tomorrow from 11am. This session has been made available to CEF members and associates. If you are interested please come along. It is facilitated by Donal O’Leary, www.stopfoodwate.com.

This is a comment from a member who attended one of the sessions earlier this week “Donal's workshop re composting  yesterday at the Lifetime Lab, Lee Rd was excellent, covering a wide range of topics, from food wastage to several different options re composting”.

WWD2013logo_enIn the afternoon CEF will present a workshop from 2pm -4pm to highlight World Water Day 22nd March. The theme this year is Water Cooperation. The workshop will primarily look at simple ways of conserving water, how to adapt a toilet, learn to make your own water butt to harvest water and see lots of other water saving devices.

badgeFinally CEF have teamed up with Blackrock Castle Observatory to highlight Earth Hour on Saturday 23rd March from 6pm -10pm. Earth Hour is the single, largest, symbolic mass participation event in the world. Born out of a hope that we could mobilize people to take action on climate change, Earth Hour now inspires a global community of millions of people in 7,001 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories to switch lights off for an hour as a massive show of concern for the environment. Don't forget to support our challenge.

The evening, which is FREE & open to all, will include NASA’s ViewSpace, a talk on Hydroponics, a short film on the Overview Effect, lights out from 8.30 -9.30 during which a special screening of Trashed will be show. For full details check out the Blackrock Castle Observatory website.

Hope to see you at some of these events.

Dear CEF Member Archive,
It's that time of year when we celebrate St. Patrick, Cork has turned this into a 3 day Festival, with the Parade still a focal point, CEF will partake again and its always one of the most fun and sociable events. Saturday the Bandon GAP group have organised an EcoStand at the market, Mix Your Mode, our sustainable travel campaign continues with a focus on the workplace this week transferring to shopping and leisure next week, however, it's all about behavioural change so if you have tried to Mix Your Mode we encourage you to continue. The Lifelong Learning Festival kicks off on Monday with a week long varied programme of  events to appeal to all tastes, CEF has an event at the Lifetime Lab to highlight World Water Day as part of the programme. Lastly a not to be missed event is the Earth Hour event at Blackrock Castle Observatory. Further details on all of these:

16th March 9.30am -1.30pm - Global Action Plan, Bandon & CEF Mix Your Mode at Bandon Market Energy
The stand will highlight energy saving devices and eco friendly products all available locally.  Learn about composting, how to make your own
water butt and the options available to travel in amore sustainable way.  There will be a Bike Repair workshop (provided by MDM Clonakilty) and West Cork Rural Transport are supporting the initiative with a service from Kilbrittain on Saturday.  FREE facepainting & raffle (great prizes donated by local retailers). This event is also supported by Bandon Family Support & Community Wellbeing Centre.

St. Patrick's Day Parade 00117th March - St. Patrick's Festival Parade
CEF has participated in this annual event for many years, as always aspects of environmental significance will be highlighted, we are delighted to be joined this year by the Mahon Youth Group who have created wonderful costumes from recycled materials, Cork Community Bikes join us again and our float continues to expand with Blackrock Castle Observatory joining us this year for the first time and adding perhaps a more cosmic dimension. If you want to know more you will just have to join in or come and see for yourself. If interested in participating all you have to do is wear blue - facepainting and accessories provided.

iphone pics 27518th -24th March - Mix Your Mode Focus on Shopping & Leisure
This the final week of Mix Your Mode, our sustainable travel campaign, next week will focus on how we get around in relation to shopping and our leisure activities. Why not add a basket and panniers to your bike to turn them into a mobile boot or a kit carrying vehicle. Next time you're heading to a match why not walk, cycle or take a bus.

There is no doubt that the city centre has suffered from out of town shopping centres with free parking, the city centre can be reignited as a quaity and leisurely shopping experience if part of that experience is supported by sustainable travel. Retailers supporting this campaign can get involved by creating shopfront "Mix Your Mode" displays, they will also have a limited number of Mix Your Mode shopping bags to give away. We are interested in hearing from you if you already shop or travel to leisure activities in a more sustainable way.

LLF Logo18th -24th March - Lifelong Learning Festival
The Lifelong Learning Festival celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year and has expanded to include almost 500 FREE events that are truly varied and with an appeal to everyone in the community. There will be a Seminar on the 20th March CITIES OF THE FUTURE: the EcCoWell Approach with keynote speaker Peter Kearns, co-director of PIE, and a leading Australian thinker, researcher, and consultant in lifelong learning and learning communities. Brochures available from libraries, public offices and many other outlets.

22nd March 11am -2.30pm - FREE Composting Workshop at the Lifetime Lab.
Facilitated by Donal Kelly, this workshop is being made available to CEF and associates. If you are beginning to compost or have had difficulties in the past why not come along, Donal will cover all the options available and has a wealth of knowledge to share. Part of the Lifelong Learning Festival Programme.

WWD2013logo_en 22pm -4pm - Celebrating World Water Day
This session will include information on the Water Framework Directive and interactive workshops looking at the history of water in Cork and water conservation in the home. The workshops will give people a chance to learn about the past role of the waterworks and to see and experience water saving devices in action e.g. aerated shower heads, flow restrictors, how to adapt your toilet and many more tips and ideas of saving water in everyday life. Also learn how to make your own water butt!

23rd March 6pm -10pm - Earth Hour at Blackrock Castle Observatory
