Dear CEF Member Archive,
Please find following a number of notices, some important Consultation Calls, notice for the next Green Drinks on the 10th May, an opportunity to be part of an innovative project and help to mint "The Golden Acorn", an Environmental Awareness and Energy Day at Hosfords and lastly take a look at the short You Tube created for Earth Day with Animated Space and children from Carrigaline.

Consultation Calls

National Climate Policy Development Consultation

This consultation is being held in the context of the ongoing policy development process initiated by Minister Hogan in November 2011 with the publication of the Review of national climate policy.

Closing Date: Monday 30th April 2012

Smoky Coal Ban Regulations: The purpose of the consultation exercise is to inform and assist a review of the smoky coal ban regulations to ensure that they remain fit for purpose in safeguarding air quality by limiting harmful emissions of air pollutants arising from the use of residential fuels.

Closing Date: Thursday, 17th May 2012

7th EU Environmental Action Programme (7th EAP), which will set out priority objectives to be pursued up until 2020. The consultation can be filled in here.

Closing Date: 1st June, 2012

Our final Green Drinks get together before a recess over the Summer months will take place on:
Thursday 10th May 2012
LV Bar, McCurtain Street
6.30 pm – 7.30pm.
 
This is an opportunity to allow people with an interest in sustainability and the environment to chat in an informal way.  We look forward to seeing you there.

13th May - Hosfords Garden Centre: Environmental Awareness & Energy Day
The Environmental Awareness Day is being run in conjunction with Cork County Council and Renewable Energy options will be highlighted by the leading suppliers in West Cork.

This is a final reminder of the Growing Seminar/ Showcase event taking place on Saturday in Farranree.

Farranree Community Centre, Pophams Road 
Saturday 28th April 2012
10am -1pm


CEF is hosting this event to inform people of the various opportunities to get involved with growing food, to highlight the many wonderful projects that are already building resilience in communities and to learn more about food sovereignity, how to make marginal land more productive, the importance of bees and ways to attract them to your garden.

Speakers from: The Glen & District Community Garden, Churchfield and Carrigaline Allotments, Fruitful Community Apple Harvest & Future Orchard with Presentations on: Food Sovereignty: Dr. Colin Sage; Attracting Bees to Your Garden: Tim Rowe; Transforming Marginal Land: John Dolan.

Projects are welcome to bring along promotional displays and information. After the seminar there will be an opportunity to visit either Churchfield  Allotments or the Community Garden in Blackpool. Unfortunately it is now not possible for the cafe to open.

Directions: Popham’s Road is directly opposite the entrance to Blackpool Shopping Centre. Parking near the Community Centre will be limited. If parking at the Shopping Centre you will need to cross at the traffic lights, after crossing the Commons Road you then go directly straight up Popham’s Road. Dino’s Restaurant will be on your right at the corner of the Commons Road and Popham’s Rd. The Centre is on the right between Kilnap Place and Killeen’s place and just after the Pharmacy and Post office which are on the left. See map.
 
This is a Free event and all are welcome.

Please find following the details of the Growing Seminar/ Showcase which will take place on the 28th April 2012. 

Farranree Community Centre, Pophams Road 
Saturday 28th April 2012
10am -1pm


CEF is hosting this event to inform people of the various opportunities to get involved with growing food, to highlight the many wonderful projects that are already building resilience in communities and to learn more about food security, how to make marginal land more productive, the importance of bees and ways to attract them to your garden.

Speakers from the following growing initiatives will give their own account of getting involved in growing and what the experience has been for them: 
  • Community Gardens
  • Allotments
  • Grow It Yourself (GIY)
  • Fruit & Orchards
We are delighted to have the participation of the following speakers who are all experts on the choosen topics, link for further info.: 
  • Food Security: Dr. Colin Sage
  • Attracting Bees to Your Garden: Tim Rowe
  • Transforming Marginal Land: John Dolan
Projects are welcome to bring along promotional displays and /or  materials, however, please advise if you are doing so.

Visit to local Allotments and Community Garden
CEF is very grateful to the Churchfield Allotment Project and to Churchfield Community Trust who are facilitating an optional visit to the nearby allotments and to the garden in Blackpool after the Seminar at 1pm. Churchfield Community Trust will also open up the Community Cafe where refreshments may be purchased. It would be useful for both projects to get an indication of how many people would like to visit, please register your interest. 

Limited parking will be availabe near the centre and the nearby Church of the Resurrection, however, the Centre is just a 10 minute walk from Blackpool Shopping Centre Car Park. See here for map.

This is a Free event and all are welcome.

Happy Easter. Please find following a preliminary notice of a Growing Seminar which will take place on 28th April. We are appealing for articles on Water and Food for our Spring Newsletter. Are you involved with a Spring Clean event - would you like CEF to promote this? Finally dates for Green Drinks April & May 2012.

Growing Seminar/ Showcase Event Saturday 28th April 2012
CEF is hosting this event to inform people of the various opportunities to get involved with growing food and to highlight the many wonderful projects that are already building resilience in communities.
 
We are hoping to procure a venue in proximity to the Churchfield allotments. It will be a morning event from 10am -1pm. The event will include speakers and workshops on the following:
  • Community Gardens
  • Allotments
  • Grow It Yourself Groups (GIY)
  • Fruit & Orchards
  • Food Security
We may also have a speaker on bee-keeping and community shared agriculture. The speakers and facilitators for each growing topic will be drawn from different projects throughout the city & county.  Another important aspect is to showcase what existing projects are doing, therefore, we invite groups to bring photos and any other promotional materials along to display on the day. Please let me know if you are interested in attending/ participating. Further details will be circulated shortly.
 
 
Spring Newsletter 2012
 
The format of our Newsletter in recent years has been to adopt a thematic title, borrowing from this year’s World Water Day theme the Spring Newsletter will focus loosely on Water and Food.  We welcome contributions from members and the public. If you wish to contribute please submit an article of approximately 300 words. You can also send any associated images or links and any upcoming related events. Please note that articles may have to be edited before inclusion. Please forward by Friday 20th April.
 
National Spring Clean 2012
 
April is National Spring Clean month and offers an opportunity to “Clean Up Cork”. This is an An Taisce sponsored initiative which every year results in local people through voluntary effort cleaning up their communities, for more information check out the website link here.
 
CEF is helping to mark National Spring Clean with a workshop on Saturday 14th April entitled “Spring Flowers from Spring Clean”  upcycling old rubbish to make something beautiful by creating spring flowers.  The workshop will create large flowers to be a display installation piece at Dunmanway Family Resource Centre to raise awareness around waste and the importance of protecting nature.

Please let us know if you are having a Spring Clean Event in your area which we can promote.
 
Green Drinks
April: Tuesday 10th at The Arch Bar, Dunmanway @ 8pm includes a presentation on "Developing a New Currency"

May: Thursday 10th at the LV Bar, McCurtain Street @ 6.30pm. Topic TBC

Green drinks is a get together to allow people with an interest in sustainability and the environment to chat in an informal way. All welcome.
