Dear CEF Member Archive,
Please find following an update on the Mix Your Mode Campaign, reminder of a members meeting and the many events CEF is involved with in March - looks like being one of the busiest and most varied months.
Mix Your Mode
This campaign which takes place from the 4th – 24th March, 2013 in Cork City and county was launched on Monday by the Lord Mayor Cllr. John Buttimer and Mayor of the County, Cllr. Barbara Murray joined by all types of vehicles and the partners and supporters of the initiative. This campaign encourages people to mix up the way they travel, instead of driving to take the train or the bus, cycle, walk, car pool using the Avego app, try out a GoCar, an electric vehicle or the park & ride service or why not be really innovative and use the river. There is a focus on schools and colleges in the first week, with Green Schools, CIT and UCC all undertaking activities to highlight sutainable travel, the 2nd week targets commuting to the workplace, whilst the last week encourages us to change how we get to the shops or to our leisure activities. We encourage everyone to support and get involved in this initiative, which ultimately is about reducing CO2 emissions and reducing traffic congestion.More information and photos on the website.
Members Meeting
This will take place at Turners Cross Community Centre next Tuesday 26th February at 8pm. The meeting will allow members to get to know one another, it will provide an opportunity to become more familiar with the projects CEF is involved with. Members will have an opportunity to have any queries and questions answered and if they wish to get more involved in activities and projects. Representatives from the Management committee will attend so that members know the people involved in running the organisation. If you are not a member but are interested in joining CEF you are very welcome to attend.
March Events
March is proving to be extremely busy with some great events and something that will appeal to everyone. The month begins with the Engineers Open Day at the Lifetime Lab at which CEF will have a stand. In collaboration with the UCC Environmetal Society there will be an Information Evening on Fracking, the presenters include Jeremy Gilbert, a petroleum engineer, born in Dublin and now living in West Cork. Jeremy worked for the oil industry for almost 4 decades, from London to the Middle East and Scotland to North America. As an engineer he has first-hand knowledge of the technical developments and achievements of the industry. There will be other guest speakers from the Geology Department, UCC and from Good Energies Alliance Ireland (GEAI).
CEF annually marks National Tree Week and World Water Day, we support the Lifelong Learning Festival and this year to mark the 10th Anniversary there is a special Seminar Cities of the Future the EcCoWell Approach. This is by invite only, I will advise if there are any additional spaces available. One of the most fun events every year is the excuse to dress up for the Patrick's Day Parade Float , CEF will highlight sustainable energy, travel and a display to link with the Water theme this year. We are lucky to be joined this year by a group of young people from the Mahon Youth Development Group who are busy working on their costumes and dance - you'll have to join in or come and view the parade to find out more! We are delighted to be marking Earth Hour in conjunction with Blackrock Castle Observatory, who have organised a great evening of activities from 6pm -10pm. "Trashed" will screen during lights out, “Narrated by Jeremy Irons, it sees him set out to discover the extent and effects of the global waste problem, as he travels around the world to beautiful destinations tainted by pollution. This is a not to be missed film and is starkly shocking in how we despoil the land and our seas with our waste.
