Dear CEF Member Archive,
This is definitely my final information circular for today and for a little while. Some events happening this week and next, also an interesting Seminar being hosted by NEES, training for Local Climate Change Action Plans and a great new course at UCC, MA in Landscape, Built Heritage and Design.


Green Drinks at Tom Barry's, Barrack Street from 8pm
Green drinks is a get together to allow people with an interest in sustainability and the environment to chat in an informal way.All welcome.
 
Global Action Plan Training at We Made This, South Presentation commencing 25th July
This training which will be facilitated by Jennifer Muscheidt, CEF, will commence on the 25th July for a period of 6 weeks. The workshop style training will run from 10.30am -12pm easch Thursday. The training deals with the everyday issues of Waste, Energy, Water, Transport, Consumerism and Community.

IWT Forthcoming Events
The Cork Branch of the Irish Wildilfe Trust are offering a woodland walk on the 15th June a woodland walk. This is a great opportunity and the walk will be led by Eugene Curran an expert in  woodland management. Betsborough Woods is especially beautiful at this time of the year. The walk is easy. The walk will also involve learning about how woodlands are managed and about trees and wildflowers that can be found in a woodland at this time of year. Everyone is welcome. The event is FREE.
 
Meeting in Betsborough Wood, near Skibbereen. Time 2pm. Opposite the old creamery at Cloghan. This is three miles from Skibbereen on the Caheragh Road. Contact the branch if you need a map. This is an interesting walk and not to be missed. Bring pack lunch, footwear for walking and waterproof and warm clothing.

NEES Project Selects Best Practices & Seminar at CCAE on 25th June
The NEES Project is a partnership of 8 academic and research agencies and social enterprises, funded under the EU’s Northern Periphery Programme to identify best practice and to disseminate the benefits of using natural and recycled products found in the Region, and the professional services that promote their use. To achieve this aim, NEES has had 2 public Calls for Best Practises, receiving over 50 submissions to date from 5 partner regions. 

We try to combat climate change by promoting energy efficiency. But how energy efficient are the products that we are using for this purpose? How much energy is expended in their production and how much waste is generated? The NEES (Natural Energy Efficiency and Sustainability) Project believes that we could save more energy and reduce the carbon foot-print of house-building and retrofit if used materials and processes that needed less energy to produce and had less impact on the environment of their entire Life Cycle. This will be the theme of a Seminar to be held at Cork Centre for Architectural Education (UCC) at 2 PM on June 25^th. Project partners will also present their experience to date in identifying and applying Best Practices in natural products and services that enhance energy efficiency and originate from the Northern Periphery of Europe.

• How to Develop Local Climate Change Action Plans 21^st June 2013

Lastly an interesting new course in UCC, having attended the Walkability Seminar yesterday and with my involvement in EcCoWell this course is timely and can strengthen the cross sectoral approach to planning.

New MA in Landscape, Built Heritage and Design here in UCC.
 
The new MA is now on the UCC calendar for 2013. It is a one-year taught course aimed at a general intake from people with different academic backgrounds. Some of the modules can also be taken by professionals of various kinds looking for CPD or ‘top-up’ skills.  In our rationale for developing it we have promoted the need…” to explore, in a cross disciplinary setting, the ways in which sustainable decisions can be made about built environments, heritage and landscape assets everywhere. With a practical focus, it will develop awareness of how new development can respect the character, traditions and quality of existing places while – in appropriate circumstances – facilitating change, improvement and development…”.

This evening a consultation takes place on the Marina Park Development and this week is the final opportunity to input to this stage of the consultation on the Cork City Development Plan.

Draft Marina Park Masterplan - Deadline for Submissions Wednesday 26th June by 4pm.
A public consultation information forum will be held today Tuesday, 11th June 2013 at the Atrium, City Hall between 4.30pm and
8.00pm, for those who wish to attend. Copies of the Plan are available for inspection at the Reception Desk, City Hall between 9.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday, or online here.

Cork City Development Plan - Deadline for Submissions Monday 17th June by 4pm.
Cork City Council has commenced the review of the City Development Plan 2009-2015 and preparations of a new City Development Plan. 
Written submissions or observation are invited from interested parties during the period of 22nd April 2013 to 4pm, 17th June 2013. Please see here the related issues document.

Consultation period extended for CEDRA feedback
The CEDRA (Commission for Economic Development of Rural Areas) invitation to submit comments has been extended to  30^th June  (original closing date was 30^th April).  See their website. 
 
The Commission was established by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government to conduct a comprehensive research exercise and produce a detailed report that will inform the medium term economic development of rural areas for the period to 2025.

 
Public Consultation for Ireland’s first Aarhus Convention National Implementation Report 2014

The Aarhus Convention lays down a set of basic rules to promote citizen’s involvement in environmental matters and improve enforcement of environmental law. Its provisions are broken down into three Pillars: Access to Information, Public Participation in Environmental Decision-making, and Access to Justice. Ireland ratified the Aarhus Convention on 20 June 2012.
Prior to finalising Ireland’s first National Implementation Report, Minister Hogan encourages members of the public and other parties with an interest in the protection of Ireland’s environment to submit comments on the implementation of the Aarhus Convention into Irish law.
The purpose of this consultation is to provide the UNECE, the Aarhus Convention Secretariat and the Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee with the widest possible range of views and opinions on issues related to the implementation and practical arrangements for the promotion of the Aarhus Convention in Ireland.

Cork Launch of Bike Week and Events

As it's been a while since I've sent a circular, I'm making up for it by forwarding a few today. One is dedicated to informaing you about Bike Week and there will be one regarding some current consultation process.

BIKE WEEK - NATIONAL LAUNCH EVENT IN CORK SUNDAY 16TH JUNE

National Bike Week takes place from the 15^th -23^rd June 2013, this year Cork takes centre stage with the National Launch Event taking place on Sunday 16^th June. The opening event will include a cycle parade around the scenic streets of the city commencing at 11am, registration on the day or on-line, followed by a free entertainment show that includes the spectacular RampRage Bike Stunts, Bike Polo (invented in Ireland in 1891), Cork Community Circus, Giga Balls, Bling Your Bike, Facepainting, music and much much more.

You can register for the cycle parade by completing the form here or on the day from 10.30am at Patrick Street (outside Brown Thomas). Bikes for hire will be available from the Bike Shed, Cillian Read 086 6028228, on the day for only €5 (security required). 

Week long events to suit all tastes from a Rickshaw Tour of Cork’s Historical Islands, a Lunchtime Cycle to Fitzgerald's Park followed by entertainment from the Cork Academy of Music, the Electric Mid-Summer Cycle, with the last event of the week being the regular Pedal in the Park from Passage to Blackrock Castle.

There will be Family Fun Cycles across the county including Ballydehob, Ballingeary, Skibbereen  and many more – see following. 




All these events are free so please join in the fun and activitiy that is Bike Week and encourage your family, friends and colleagues to come along.

Follow Operation Transportation, now in it's second year, with the 6 participants taking up the challenge to cycle just 10 mins a day and record their experiences.and renewed relationship with cycling! Check it out on Facebook.

Notices for May, opportunity to input to the Cork City Development plan and gear up for National Bike Week with Cork celebrating the National launch event for 2013.

Composting Demonstration Sunday 12th May
May is composting month and events are supported by Cork County Council throughout the county. Eilish Munday, GAP Facilitator, will facilitate a composting session at Bandon Garden Centre on Sunday 12^th May. Cork County Council are sponsoring the raffle prize, a new style tumbler composter and there will also be FREE facepainting. D.J. Murphy will be providing some special discounts on the day and there may also be a talk by a celebratory gardener.

Eco-Product Stand at Bandon Show Sunday 19th May

CEF and Global Action Plan members will have an EcoProduct Stand at the Bandon Show on Sunday 19th May 2013.The stand will feature products from insulation materals, to chimney balloons, wind up torches and coconut shell pan cleaners – all products are available at local stores in Bandon from Bandon Co-op, Kellehers, An Tobairin and the Wild Side. There is also a childrens art competition to make a farm animal from recycled materials. Bring your Animal to The Cork Environmental Forum Stall at the 2013 Bandon Agricultural Show on Sunday 19th May & be in with a chance to Win some Great Prizes.

Free raffle for a tumbler composter – sponsored by Carbery Plastics & Free facepainting always popular with children of all ages will be available at the stand. So come along and enjoy one of the first agricultural shows of the year.

Biodiversity Day 22nd May
Two National Schools will join environmental educators Jessica Mason and Stephanie O'Toole for a day out in the woods. Trafask NS, Adrigole and Derrycreha NS, Glengarriff have been invited to come to the woods for a hands-on look at biodiversity and water in the local environment. The day will involve interactive games and activities looking at the water cycle, the vital importance of water in the environment and its relationship with biodiversity, as well as a river surveying and dipping field trip.

BIKE WEEK - NATIONAL LAUNCH EVENT 2013 TO BE HELD IN CORK

Mass cycle parade through the scenic streets of Cork on Sunday 16th June followed by some spectaculr entertainment at the Grand Parade.

Places on the cycle parade will be limited so please register by completing the form here.

There will be events and activities thoughout the week. There is also an opportunity to get involved directly through Operation Transportation, now in it's second year this is  chnce to get off the couch and reignite your relationship with cycling! Check it out on Facebook and take up the challenge to cycle just 10 mins a day and record your experiences.

Happy Earth Day - highlighting the Face of Climate Change. A day when EU Environment Ministers met under the Irish presidency! Events celebrated at Blackrock Castle will be featured on the RTE News at 9pm so you might just catch it or if not there's always the Player.

It continues to be a busy and eventful time of year, please find following some details of events and activities that CEF is directly involved with and some notices from other organisations.

Screening of Trashed
Thursday 25^th April at 6pm – Midleton Library
Tuesday 30^th April at 7.30pm – The Venue, O’Donovan’s Hotel, Clonakilty
After the film there will be an opportunity to discuss some of the issues raised by this informative and hard hitting exploration of how we deal with our waste. Free events& all are welcome to attend.

Global Action Plan
Thanks to support from Cork County Council, CEF is running a Pilot Training of GAP for Guesthouses with B&B and guesthouse owners in Clonakilty from Wednesday 24^th April. The Bandon GAP group will again showcase eco-products with a stand at Bandon Show on Sunday 19^th May 2013. A childrens art & craft competition to make a farm animal from re-cycled materials in being run in conjunction with the stand and prizes include a visit to Rumleys Farm and a number of vouchers. Entries to the stand on the day

Composting
May is composting month and events are supported by Cork County Council throughout the county. EcCoWell & Cities for the Future Conference 26^th & 27^th September
Peter Kearns, who formulated the concept of EcCoWell, was the keynote speaker at a seminar organised in Cork as part of the 10th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival, on Wednesday March 20^th, 2013. As a follow-up to the seminar an international EcCoWell Conference and Ideas Exchange will take place in Cork City on September 26 & 27, 2013

Ireland’s Badgers – fighting a losing battle?
The war on BovineTb (Btb) has always been an emotive issue. It has pitted farmers and conservationists against each other since Btb was first discovered in badgers in the early seventies. Fintan Kelly - IWT Research Officer - will explain the conflict, Ireland’s total disregard for the Bern convention, the failure of the Bern Standing Committee to carry out its mandate to protect the badger, and how the issue is being tackled by our nearest neighbours.Come along and hear Fintan's latest updates on IWT Campaign against Badger Culling in Ireland and join the debate!

This event is for free and everybody is very welcome to attend.

Working with Lime
IRD Duhallow, in association with the Building Limes Forum Ireland, is organising a 2-day lime seminar at the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, County Cork, on May 10^th and 11^th next which you are cordially invited to attend. The seminar will be of interest to anyone looking after historic buildings and to all those who would like to understand more about lime and its traditional use in Irish building, including why it is important, how best to repair it, and when to renew it.More details.

An Taisce - Clean Coasts Week 2013!

It’s the 10^th anniversary of Clean Coasts so why not get involved and help celebrate! An Taisce will be sending out the clean up kits in early May in time for the week from the 10^th -17^th May .All groups that register will be entered in a draw to win an Ipad. A winner will be announced at the end of Clean Coasts Week so keep an eye on the Facebook page for the announcement! Dear CEF Member Archive,
April by now is somewhat synonymous with An Taisce's National Spring Clean. National Spring Clean is Ireland's most popular, well recognised and successful anti-litter initiative. Now in its 14th year, the campaign encourages every sector of society to actively participate and take responsibility for litter, by actually conducting clean-ups in their own local environment. The campaign runs throughout the month of April. CEF is getting involved with some beach clean-ups, there will be a few Nappucino - Real Nappy Week talks and more screenings of Trashed. You can get involved in these events or organise your own local clean-up and register your event online or by phone with An Taisce.

3rd April:    Beach clean-up in partnership with Garryvoe Hotel and An Taisce Clean Coast Programme. Meet at the carpark of the Hotel at 2pm. 
                    Details of other clean-ups to be finalised.

16th April:  Talk and discussion at Blackpool Library "Real Nappies... Real Change!" to inspire a new generation of parents to make the change   and Go Real.

Trashed       To be screened in Midleton, Clonakilty and Newmarket during April, details of dates and venues will be circulated shortly.

10th April    See details of a public meeting in Macroom to identify Job Creation Opportunities. If you are unable to attend but have ideas you would like to input especially in the area of "green jobs" please let me know.



13th April     Cork County Council and An Taisce's Clean Coast Programme are having an East Cork Coastcare Seminar on Saturday 13th April  at 1.30pm for coastal groups in the East Cork area. This is by invite, however, if you are interested you can contact Aidan Gray by phone or email at 087 6826934 or agray@eeu.antaisce.org. 

Adopt A Road: This scheme introduced last year by Cork County Council is ideal for groups such as Tidy Towns who wish to take on an additional challenge to combat litter in their area. We encourage groups to consider taking on this scheme especially for National Spring Clean month.  See details.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre, in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Northern Ireland Environment Agency, Coillte and the Centre for Environmental Data and Recording is organising Ireland’s BioBlitz event on 24 & 25 May 2013.  The event will be held at four locations; Wicklow Mountains National Park, Co. Wicklow, Burren National Park, Co. Clare, Lough Key Forest Park, Co. Roscommon and Colebrooke Estate, Co. Fermanagh. More details.

Lastly I have a few notices of forthcoming courses from associates which are not environmentally related but may be of interest. SHEP Courses in Cork April & May and "Create Harmony" with Thomas Reidmuller.

It’s the last week of Mix Your Mode and I would really appreciate if you could circulate this email and encourage people to support our earth hour challenge.

We are involved in 2 events at the Lifetime Lab tomorrow, Friday 22nd March, as part of the Lifelong Learning Festival:
There will be a final FREE composting workshop at the Lifetime Lab tomorrow from 11am. This session has been made available to CEF members and associates. If you are interested please come along. It is facilitated by Donal O’Leary, www.stopfoodwate.com.
 
This is a comment from a member who attended one of the sessions earlier this week “Donal's workshop re composting  yesterday at the Lifetime Lab, Lee Rd was excellent, covering a wide range of topics, from food wastage to several different options re composting”.
 
In the afternoon CEF will present a workshop from 2pm -4pm to highlight World Water Day 22^nd March. The theme this year is Water Cooperation. The workshop will primarily look at simple ways of conserving water, how to adapt a toilet, learn to make your own water butt to harvest water and see lots of other water saving devices.
 
Finally CEF have teamed up with Blackrock Castle Observatory to highlight Earth Hour on Saturday 23^rd March from 6pm -10pm. Earth Hour is the single, largest, symbolic mass participation event in the world. Born out of a hope that we could mobilize people to take action on climate change, Earth Hour now inspires a global community of millions of people in 7,001 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories to switch lights off for an hour as a massive show of concern for the environment. Don't forget to support our challenge.

The evening, which is FREE & open to all, will include NASA’s ViewSpace, a talk on Hydroponics, a short film on the Overview Effect, lights out from 8.30 -9.30 during which a special screening of Trashed will be show. For full details check out the Blackrock Castle Observatory website.
